Guide by Ian
I don't take cold showers because I enjoy them. I take them because the first thirty seconds of the day are otherwise a negotiation, and I lose that negotiation a lot.
Hot water is fine. I still start there. Soap, hair, the normal shower. Then I turn it cold and I stay. Not an ice bath. Not a lake in January. The handle all the way over, thirty seconds, breathing like a person instead of a startled dog.
That's the whole program. One check.
I actually started doing this to address some dry skin and eczema on my arms. A splash of cold water right at the end sealed and firmed things up and kept my arms from blotching painful, itching, red almost hives all day. Game changer.
This is the one that counts.
End of the shower, cold tap, stay under it. Thirty seconds is enough to mark the day. If you can do a minute, do a minute. If the hotel tap only gets to "unpleasant," that still counts. The point is you turned it and you didn't hop out.
What doesn't count: thinking about it. Splashing your wrists. "The water was kind of cool today." You know the difference.
If you have a heart condition, talk to a doctor before you make this a daily thing. This is a habit, not a therapy.
One goal. Cold finish. Tap it when you stayed under.
Travel days are the ones that break it, so the bar stays low on purpose. Thirty seconds in a bad hotel shower still keeps the chain. A second shower later in the day can take a second check if you want the record. The chain only needs one.
Turn it cold. Stay. That's the work.
